Stitch Journal Projects

During 2016, I embroidered each day on linen, using a color observed in my backyard in western Massachusetts. In all, I stitched 12 separate pieces, one for each month, that traced the progress of the seasons.

The year's work was rooted in the place where I live, and in the changing seasons. And, as an embodiment of my own inner response to outer reality, the project also had the personal quality of a journal.

I used only one color, and one type of stitch, each day. The compositions were abstract and were improvised as I worked. Now that the stitching is finished, the completed 12 pieces will be stretched over canvas, and ultimately I hope to exhibit them as a group.

Images were posted weekly here on the blog and daily on Instagram.

Stitch Journal Day 3: the breeze blew in some French knots

My Stitch Journal for 2017 began on January 13. I'm documenting it in my Patreon feed, with occasional posts on Instagram and here on the blog.

Loving your stitch journal. What kind of floss do you use?

Thank you! I use Valdani perle cotton.

Thank you! Did you mention what size each piece of cloth is? I can't seem to find the answer. Or maybe each month is different?

Each month's piece is the same size. I'm stitching on linen 17 x 17 inches square, which I will stretch over a 12 x 12-inch canvas.

One more question. Which #thread do you use? I am not familiar with that brand and have never seen it in person so am unsure about the 3 different thicknesses. Thank you.

I use Valdani perle cotton. It comes in different weights. The higher the number, the thinner the thread.
